The scholarships awarded by the VC are designed to assist students on their musical journeys. Recipients can use the funds for expenses such as lessons, instrument repairs or sheet music.
Scholarships will be awarded during the final performance of the NextGen Ensembles on May 11, 2025. The three LAMA conductors, in collaboration with the VC, will determine the recipients based on criteria such as leadership, commitment and most improved player.
Steve Hornett, VC Chair, noted that the funds supporting the VC’s Scholarship Program are in excellent shape. He also expressed optimism about the VC’s ability to support additional youth orchestra programmes across the Waterloo Region.
About the NextGen Youth Orchestra
The NextGen Youth Orchestra (NGYO) redefines the traditional youth orchestra by exploring diverse genres like pop, rock, hip hop, country, film, and video game music, alongside works by traditional and underrepresented composers. Led by artistic director Shawn Bennett and associate conductor, Amely Zhou, the NGYO offers musicians aged 12-20 a culturally inclusive, forward-thinking space for orchestral exploration and performance. The program emphasizes personal growth through collaboration, leadership opportunities and immersion in one-of-a-kind repertoire.
About the Junior Hawks Beginning Concert Band
The Junior Hawks Beginning Concert Band, led by conductor Kirk Kiernander, introduces students to concert band experiences before 7th grade, for the express purpose of supporting regional youth bands and strengthening music education in schools. Participants engage in small group rehearsals led by ³Ô¹ÏÍø music students, gaining foundational skills while offering student leaders valuable hands-on teaching experiences.
About the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Volunteer Committee

As a separate charitable organisation, the VC has consistently focused on fundraising for the KWS and providing volunteer support for its activities. The VC’s Youth Orchestra Scholarship Programme, established in 1976, is supported by both a standing fund and individual donations.
How You Can Support Young Musicians
