Anyone can make a dollar, but you want to make a difference too. At a time when protecting human rights is most critical, a degree in Human Rights can help you launch a career that lessens conflict, maintains peace, and even saves lives. Whether you’re learning about child marriage, refugees or crimes against humanity, your education will empower you to understand what shapes our society and then stand up for what’s right.
Here are just a few ways Human Rights grads are changing the world for the better.
What can’t you do with a Human Rights degree? From protecting children around the world to police training at home, human rights experts are the people we turn to when we want to ensure all people live lives of respect and dignity.
Graduates are using what they’ve learned in their program to launch an NGO that advances young women’s rights, build a career in human resources at Amnesty International, and conduct analysis for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, among many others. Or they’re combining a law degree with Human Rights to use litigation to protect those who need it most.
How do you make sure a Northern Ontario mine located close to an Indigenous reserve doesn’t have a negative impact on the young women who live there? One Human Rights student is working with a government agency to solve that sensitive challenge. Another student is helping with fundraising at a large healthcare foundation. Get relevant experience while still in school and you’ll graduate career-ready.
Put your idealism to work! Your degree can be as specialized as your interests. Grads who earn a non-profit career foundations certificate learn how to write a grant proposal, understand non-profit laws and regulations, governance and budgeting. It’s also possible to get a post-grad certificate as part of your degree in human resources, event planning or project management. These skills are transferable between careers and industries, so there will always be an interesting job ready for you.
You don’t have to go to Geneva or New York to make a difference. If you believe human rights belong to everyone, a degree in Human Rights puts you on the path to developing your own core social values while championing the rights of others. The world needs more of that – and you!
