Kyoung-hee Kim majored in Music Composition at Sookmyung Women’s University and graduated with Bachelor of Art in 1981. Then she studied orchestral conducting at Universitat der Kunste Berlin and graduated in 1988.
Kyoung-hee received public recognition as the first female orchestra conductor in Korea. She conducted the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra after returning to Korea and has worked with a wide variety of domestic orchestras including Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, KBS Symphony Orchestra, many city symphony orchestras such as Incheon, Busan, Suwon, Bucheon, Gwangju, Daegu, Ulsan, Mokpo, Pohang, Changwon, Jeju, Gangnam, Korean Symphony Orchestra, and Prime Philharmonic Orchestra. She also conducted oversea orchestras including Russian Philharmonic Orchestra. Sophia National Orchestra, and Bulgaria Vratsa Philharmonic Orchestra.
In 2007, Kyoung-hee became the permanent conductor of Gwacheon Symphony Orchestra and has received public acclaim for the orchestra’s performances which have shown the quintessence of classical music. Thanks to continuous development, Kassel and Saabrachen in Germany and Beijing invited the orchestra.
As a music professor at Sookmyung Women’s University, she conducted Sookmyung Philharmonic Orchestra at The Sydney Opera Hose and at the opening concert of Vladivostok festival. She was also invited to conduct Indiana University Orchestra and received unstinted praise from media all over the world as a conductor who deeply touched with high quality performances.
Kyoung-hee was awarded the prime minister prize as the best female conductor when she was a permanent conductor of Gwacheon Symphony Orchestra in 2012. She is actively serving as dean of College of Music at Sookmyung Women’s University and as chairman of the Korean Conductors Association.
