Dr. Darren Thomas is a member of the Seneca Nation, and is Bear Clan and resides at the Grand River Territory of the Haudenosaunee. Darren is an Associate Professor in the Indigenous Studies Program and in July 2021 accepted an appointment as the Associate Vice-President of Indigenous Initiatives at ³Ô¹ÏÍø. As a senior leader of Indigenous Initiatives at ³Ô¹ÏÍø, he manages a team of staff that has the responsibility to support Indigenous students, staff, and faculty to reach their highest potential, while developing a strategic vision and implementation for Indigenization, decolonization, and reconciliation. Darren’s personal research interests are: Indigenous thought and philosophy, Indigenous community development, strengthening and improving Indigenous health and well-being, Indigenous law, and Indigenous rights and resource governance.
My dissertation project is examining Indigenous rights and resource governance in the "Ring of Fire" in Northern Ontario.
I am also part of an international team of scholars and activists that are documenting the implementation of free, prior, informed consent in North and South America.
