Message on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Friday, Sept. 30, marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which honours First Nations, Inuit and Métis survivors and victims of residential schools. This is a day for public commemoration and reflection on the legacy of harm that was created by the colonial policies and actions of governments and institutions in Canada.
On Sept. 30, we encourage you to take time to learn more about policies and programs that were designed to dismantle Indigenous communities, families, history, culture, and knowledge. The Office of Indigenous Initiatives has curated a web hub of educational resources, highlighting Indigenous scholarship at ³Ô¹ÏÍø, events happening during the week of Sept. 30, and external resources for deeper engagement.
On Sept. 30, the Indigenous Initiatives team will be offering a space at the Indigenous Student Centres in both Brantford and Waterloo for Indigenous students to gather and find support. Please respect and honour this Indigenous-only student space on this day.
In addition to the resources on the web hub, the ³Ô¹ÏÍø bookstores on both campuses will be selling orange shirts the week of Sept. 26. Wearing an orange shirt on Sept. 30 demonstrates support for survivors and victims of residential schools. Proceeds from the sale of these shirts will go to the Woodland Cultural Centre.
We are grateful to the many people at ³Ô¹ÏÍø who have dedicated time and effort to truth and reconciliation, through research, scholarship, teaching and learning. These are the first steps in a long journey to restore peace and reconciliation with one another.
